Tucked down a small city lane, with a neighbouring shoe-repair place and a sushi bar, this inconspicuous lunch spot draws inspiration from the classic Italian deli. And it has a lot of charm. Previously a nondescript pho joint, the space has had a complete makeover, turning the small space into a slick, modern eatery with art-deco style curves, wooden swivel stools and a bright neon “deli” sign above the counter.Chef Brian Narciso (La Luna, The European and Gorski & Jones) heads up the kitchen, smoking trout, curing pickles and preparing salads which fill the deli counter. The menu, put together by writer and regular New Guernica DJ Nick Jamieson, features six rotating daily salads. When we visited there was trout orecchiette, a salad of enoki mushroom with edamame, cherry-smoked chicken and farro and a zucchini ribbon salad. The sandwiches include a tonkatsu roll (crumbed pork, cheese and coleslaw), a mushroom roll or a Reuben sandwich. There is also house-made tequila-cured salmon and a selection of unusual cheeses (including the only smoked blue cheese in the world, apparently). Dine in or take these home with cured meat, pasta and a bottle of wine. Because it is licensed, Chuckle Deli also offers a small selection of international wines, the owner’s favourite spirits and some beers to have with lunch.

Sousou fascinates all who gaze upon her effortless charm; French music, eclectic art scenes capturing many nudes, cane and marble furniture spill out onto the pavement, beautifully worn woods, an endless leather banquette, copper and parchment chandeliers and the carefully selected wines await in her 'cave bien approvisionee'. Taking a fresh approach on classic French fair, the kitchen relies heavily on local, seasonal and sustainable produce to present a menu that is timeless but still manages to excite and wet the senses.
Representing some of central Melbourne's most charming late 19th century history, the Block Arcade site was purchased for 18 pounds in 1891 and a small tea room was set-up for the Victorian Ladies Work Association.Named after its founder Lady Hopetoun, The Hopetoun Tea Rooms continues the proud tradition of quality, combining old world charm with the heritage of fine food amidst the tranquil beauty of the fully restored Block Arcade.
Protagonists Of Hospitality & Drink Culture
Black without, light and airy within, Top Paddock is a former car park reborn as a dapper Jetsons-era cantina that looks right at home among its fancy-pants neighbours at the furniture showroom end of Church Street. Those who’ve dined – or queued – at parent café Two Birds will notice the family resemblances. The prolific use of timber. The white tiling. The grab-bag of seating options ranging from booths to communal tables to stools at the counter: ideal for those hoping to get within stroking distance of one of Top Paddock’s two Synesso coffee-making machines. Even more impressive is the flurry of barista activity taking place behind the white powder-coated behemoth. Those thousand coffees a day – made with a Five Senses house blend, or one of four single origins – aren’t going to make themselves, you know.
